Reduce unnecessary imaging for uncomplicated low back pain
Routine imaging for uncomplicated low back pain is not recommended. If there is no indication of an underlying condition or trauma, avoiding imaging can prevent unnecessary harms from radiation and reduce health care costs.
We are partnering with providers to follow consensus guideline care with:
- Promotion for initial conservative management for 28-day observation period.
- Reinforcement of documentation of red flag symptoms when imaging is clinically indicated.
Plus, we support patient and provider education on holistic, evidence-based low back pain management.
Use opioids properly
We're partnering with providers to help minimize the misuse of opioids by implementing safety policies that:
- Limit the supply of prescription opioids to 7 days in first-time recipients.
- Require prior authorization for long-acting opioids.
- Provide opioid care coordination alerts to monitor daily limits of opioids and alerting healthcare providers.
Plus, our opioid prescriber programs encourage education and optimization of pain management.
Supporting proper use of antibiotics
Antibiotic stewardship is a key initiative we have been supporting since 2010. We're partnering with providers by:
- Providing patient education materials to support conversations about appropriate antibiotic use and when antibiotics may not be clinically indicated.
- Supporting symptom management for viral illness, including guidance on over‑the‑counter options when antibiotics are not recommended.
- Sharing best practices and educational resources to promote appropriate antibiotic use.
