Preventive care: your secret to better health

Preventative care your secret to better health

Routine physicals and screenings help make sure you’re in good health, even when you feel fine. Many diseases, like high blood pressure and high cholesterol, can show little to no symptoms. Getting the proper preventive tests lets your doctor take an in-depth look to detect any conditions or health risks.

These visits also help you form healthy habits before problems arise. While checkups and screenings can seem minor, all together they are an effective way to get the big picture about your health.

What happens during a preventive care visit

There are a several ways your doctor can get you up to date on your preventive care, including:

  • Screenings – These can help spot conditions early or before you’ve even developed them. Typical screenings include blood tests and cancer screenings.
  • Vaccinations – Shots either prevent you from developing a disease or improve your body’s defenses against it. Some vaccinations require boosters to maintain their effectiveness. You may only need to get other shots once.
  • Promoting healthier living – Your doctor will ask you questions about your life, including your quality of sleep, tobacco use, physical activity and diet. Healthy habits help you avoid serious conditions and lessen the impact of ones you do develop.
  • Prescription medications – Checkups are an opportunity for your doctor to write a prescription, if necessary. When prescribed early, medications can often be more effective to treat conditions.

No one’s preventive care needs are the same. Your gender, family history and lifestyle are all factors that determine the screenings and tests you should receive.
