How to Manage Your Medications

Organizing your prescriptions can save you time, money and a lot of headaches. Not to mention, properly taking your medications can improve your health because many prescriptions are dependent on maintaining a routine schedule. Here are some ways you can make sure you’re not missing any doses and cutting costs.

Stay organized
Have you ever forgotten if you’ve taken a prescription for the day? It happens to everyone. It’s important to stick to a schedule when taking medication.

Daily pill organizers make it easy to see exactly what you need to take each day, but they must be refilled every week. Alternatively, you could create a chart that lists each medication, when to take each one and any other important info. There are also plenty of apps available that allow you to find info about your prescriptions, set up a schedule and get alerted when to take your pills.

Check labels
Prescriptions should be discarded once they’re past their expiration date. While some will just lose their effectiveness, others can become toxic when expired. Discard your prescriptions after one year if you can’t find an expiration date.

If you’re running low on a medication, request a refill from the pharmacist so you don’t miss a dose. Depending on the prescription, you may need more time to be authorized for refills.

Consider generics
Generic drugs have the same active ingredients as brand name drugs, but are usually cheaper. They’re required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to have the same safety and usage guidelines as their non-generic counterparts.

See what’s covered
We’re here to help you find the lowest prices on your medications. The Prescription Drug Cost Tool lets you see if your drug is covered under your plan and what you should expect to pay at the pharmacy. You can also compare the cost of covered drugs for all three plans to pick the best option for you.

We’re also committed to supporting those with asthma. With our asthma management resources, you can track your breathing and inhaler usage, refill your prescription online and more.
