Lay the Foundation for Overall Health with Weight Management

More than one in three adults in the United States are overweight or obese, making it one of the country's leading health problems. Those who are overweight or obese are more at risk for major health problems, like fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, gout and more.
The good news is that these conditions can be prevented and even reversed with proper weight management.
A balanced diet is a great first step in taking control of your weight. Try incorporating a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein sources into your meals. The more color, the better! For many people, it helps to plan meals ahead of time. If you feel lost, you can find recipes in cookbooks at the public library or online. In addition to balanced meals, always remember to drink plenty of water.
A regular exercise routine is another great way to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. It also lifts your mood and motivation. There are many ways to exercise but the best option is the one you enjoy. Finding a physical activity you enjoy means you’ll be more likely to keep up with it in the long run. And asking a friend to go along keeps you both accountable to your healthier lifestyle commitment.
If you’re struggling to find something you enjoy, remember that walking is a tried and true exercise accessible to most people. An added benefit to regular exercise is improved mood and energy.
Aside from diet and exercise, make sure you're getting enough sleep. Studies show that sleep is one of the most important tools for weight loss. When you’re short on sleep, your body releases a stress hormone called cortisol that tells your body to conserve energy to fuel your body when it's awake. Most doctors recommend seven to nine hours of sleep per night.
Lastly, make sure you have a support system around you that encourages healthy lifestyle choices. A study from 2016 showed that people with peer support were more likely to follow a plan of healthy eating and exercise.
Weight can be a sensitive subject, but your doctors are there to help guide you toward the best plan for you. If you need additional support, we offer nutritional counseling via Teladoc® to all members. You can also find a local registered dietician in our provider directory. These visits are covered in full when you visit a Preferred provider.
All in all, maintaining a healthy weight can significantly improve your quality of life and overall health. We are there for you every step of the way.
