Honey can be just as nutritious as it is delicious.

Honey is hard not to love as it is. It’s sweet. It’s natural. It goes great with so many foods. But what else does it bring to the table? Check out these added health benefits that you probably didn’t know about honey.

1. Contains plant compounds
Honey contains bioactive plant compounds that make it a healthier alternative to sugar, which is 100% empty calories. Typically, the darker the honey, the higher the content of plant compounds.

2. Rich in antioxidants
High-quality honeys contain lots of antioxidants, like organic acids and flavonoids. Antioxidants are known to help lower blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart attacks, strokes and some types of cancer.

3. Improves cholesterol levels
Studies have shown that honey can modestly lower bad cholesterol (LDL) levels, which are linked with heart disease, and significantly raise good cholesterol (HDL) levels.

4. Lowers triglycerides
Triglycerides are another risk factor for heart disease and are associated with insulin resistance, a major driver of type 2 diabetes. The same study as mentioned previously links regular honey consumption with lower triglyceride levels, especially when it’s used to replace sugar.

5. Promotes healing
Topical honey treatments have been used to help cure burns and wounds, dating all the way back to ancient Egypt. Some attribute its healing powers to antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as its ability to nourish surrounding tissue.

6. Suppresses coughs
Over-the-counter cough medicines can have irritating side effects. Honey, however, is a natural and safe cough suppressant. It’s especially effective in children over the age of one.

Keep in mind, honey is still high in sugar and calories. It’s a healthier alternative to refined sugars, but it should still be consumed in moderation.
