6 Ways to Alleviate Arthritis Pains as Temperatures Drop

Tips for keeping your arthritis at bay as colder weather approaches.

Fall means colder weather is approaching. And for those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), colder weather can have a significant impact on your bones and joints. The cold triggers stiffness and swelling, which are usually accompanied by aches and pains. But there are steps you can take to combat your RA in these typically uncomfortable months.

Get active
Exercising is a great way to loosen up your bones and joints. And it can help keep your weight down, which in turn helps reduce the stress on your joints. Try bringing your workouts indoors to avoid the cold. With the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Service Benefit Plan, you get access to Fitness Your Way, which gives you a low-cost fitness membership to more than 10,000 gyms nationwide.

Clear your mind
Keeping a positive frame of mind can go a long way when it comes to managing your RA pain. Try meditative activities like massages, acupuncture or yoga. Yoga doubles as a great exercise that won’t put too much pressure on your joints.

Stretch regularly
Start a stretching routine. Focus on the areas that trouble you most and gradually increase the difficulty of the stretches day to day. There are some simple stretches for your wrists, fingers, ankles and knees that take just minutes out of your day.

Eat healthy
A healthy diet can also help when it comes to stiffness and swelling. Mix in foods that are high in vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, as these are known to help fight inflammation. And as always, stay hydrated.

Bundle up
Keep your body warm by doubling up on layers. Get a good pair of warm gloves to make sure your hands are covered and try not to keep them exposed to the cold weather for long periods of time.

Find warm water
Hot tubs, baths and heated pools can bring soothing relief to arthritis pains. Just make sure you don’t transition from the heat to the cold too quickly or this will have adverse effects.
