6 Superfoods Packed with Antioxidants

Blueberries, green tea, pomegranates and turmeric get a lot of buzz. But they’re not the only foods full of antioxidant goodness. Try these six less-well known sources.

Antioxidants are the powerhouses of the food world. They fight signs of aging, combat inflammation, and can even help you lose weight. Consider adding these six unexpected sources of antioxidants to your diet.

  1. Pistachios
They’re full of healthy fats and rich in flavonoids, a class of antioxidants that are strongly anti-inflammatory.

  2. Mushrooms
Mushrooms are low in calories and high in ergothioneine, an antioxidant that some scientists say may be used to fight cancer in the future.

  3. Coffee
That’s right, your morning cup of joe is rich in chlorogenic acid, which may help keep bad cholesterol levels under control. (Just be sure not to load up on cream and sugar.)

  4. Flax
Flaxseeds and flaxseed oil are known for their high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. They also contain lignans, which may help reduce inflammation and lower cholesterol.

  5. Barley
This grain has ferulic acid, an antioxidant that’s been shown in animals to decrease negative effects on the brain after a stroke.

  6. Black tea
Black tea is high in gallic acid, a compound that may help keep cancer from spreading.
