Fridge, Counter or Pantry?

You’ve probably been there: you’re putting away your groceries, but you’re not sure where everything should go. So you make your best guess.

It’s not always clear where food should be stored. This can lead to an overloaded fridge, food that expires too soon—or worse, food poisoning. Here’s where you should store these commonly misplaced foods:

Fridge

  • Cheese
  • Butter
  • Fresh herbs
  • Deli meats
  • Berries

Why: Greens and animal products stay longer in the fridge by keeping bacteria away.

Counter

  • Tomatoes
  • Bananas
  • Bread
  • Avocados

Why: Bananas, tomatoes and avocados ripen best when they’re left out. The dry air in the fridge causes bread to get stale faster.

Pantry

  • Honey
  • Potatoes
  • Coffee
  • Tomato sauce
  • Olive oil
  • Spices
  • Canned tuna or salmon
  • Cereal

Why: Light, moisture and extreme temperatures can all affect the taste, texture or shelf life of some foods.
