Medicare Coverage at a Glance-Blue Cross and Blue Shield's Federal Employee Program

Medicare Coverage at a Glance

Understanding your coverage is the key to getting the most out of it. These fast facts will help you quickly understand the basics of Medicare.

Your Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) Service Benefit Plan and Medicare work together to deliver the value you deserve.

What's Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 or older, people under age 65 with certain disabilities, and people of any age who have End Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant).

With Standard Option

When you combine Standard Option coverage with Medicare coverage as primary, you no longer have to pay the annual deductible, coinsurance or copayments. The one exception requires you to continue paying coinsurance or copayments for prescription drugs.

With Basic Option

If you have Basic Option coverage and Medicare coverage as primary, the copayment amounts are waived for covered services when you use Preferred providers. The cost of your Medicare premiums may be offset entirely by these savings. Please note that prescription drug copayment and coinsurance amounts are not waived.

Enrolling in Medicare

For many federal employees and retirees, deciding whether to enroll in Medicare can be a difficult decision. It's important to review the four parts of Medicare, the type of coverage they provide, and whether it's right for your needs.

Questions?
