How to Pick the Right Sunglasses

Have you ever seen discounted sunglasses at the pharmacy? Or how about at the gas station? Chances are they may damage your eyes, no matter how dark they are.

Many sunglasses block the sun’s rays but not UV light. Wearing this type of sunglasses cause your eyes to dilate and allows more harmful UV rays in. Prolonged UV-light exposure can cause serious eye conditions like cataracts, macular degeneration, sunburned eyes and eyelid cancers.

Ideally, you should try buying sunglasses that:

  • Provide 99-100% protection against UVA and UVB rays
  • Block 75-90% of visible light
  • Have antireflective coating on the back side of the lenses

The antireflective coating on the back side of the lenses ensures your eyes and skin are protected from sun that manages to come in from the side. Up to 50% of UV rays that reach your eyes come from sunlight that reflects off the back side of your sunglasses.

Lenses also provide protection for your skin. The skin around your eyes is where 5-10% of all skin cancers occur. For this reason, your sunglasses should also be able to rest close to your face and not slide down. When it comes to style, try picking a pair with lenses that wrap around your face or have wider sides.
