7 Tips To Boost Your Digestive Health

Are your stomach troubles making you miserable? Gas, bloating, indigestion and diarrhea are signs that things on the inside may not be quite right. These 7 simple tips can help you restore your digestive health and re-energize your overall well-being.

  1. Say yes to fiber
Your body needs 20-35 grams of fiber each day to help with digestion and prevent constipation. Foods like grapes, raw bell peppers, beans and whole grains can get you the fiber you need, while also boosting your heart health.

  2. Slow down and savor what you eat
Did you know that it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to send your brain a signal when it’s full? Eating slowly can actually help you feel full faster, and it can also prevent indigestion, bloating and heartburn.

  3. Stay hydrated
Sipping water or herbal tea regularly allows your body to flush out waste on a regular basis.

  4. Get moving
Physical activity, such as walking, running or biking, can activate your body’s digestive system. Another positive effect of exercise is that it can help curb stress, which may be the cause of some digestive problems.

  5. Eat some good bacteria
Pick up some yogurt, snacks or supplements with probiotics—these are ‘good bacteria’ that have been shown to help if you have diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

  6. Kick the habit
Smoking can lead to acid reflux, heartburn and ulcers. It’s hard to quit for good, but keep trying and ask your doctor for help. You can also sign up for our Tobacco Cessation Incentive Program to create your quit plan and set goals with the Online Health Coach.

  7. Drink less alcohol
Too many drinks can contribute to stomach and liver problems. Try to cut back as much as you can to limit the negative effects of alcohol.
