How Your Blue Cross and Blue Shield Coverage Works With Medicare

At the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, we know that understanding health care benefits can be difficult. That's why we've put together this publication — to help you understand how the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Service Benefit Plan and Medicare work together.

Understanding Your Benefits

At the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, we know that understanding health care benefits can be difficult. That's why we've put together this booklet — to help you understand how the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Service Benefit Plan and Medicare work together.

First we'll take a brief look at Medicare. Then we'll see how Medicare coverage works in conjunction with Blue Cross and Blue Shield Standard Option and Basic Option coverages. To help you understand more fully the benefits that we'll briefly explain in this booklet, we recommend you get a copy of the 2008 Blue Cross and Blue Shield Service Benefit Plan brochure (RI 71-005) from your local Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plan or access it from this web site, 2008 Service Benefit Plan brochure (RI-71-005). Medicare publications are available by calling 1.800.633.4227 or you can visit www.medicare.gov, Medicare's web site.

If you have any questions about Blue Cross and Blue Shield Service Benefit Plan coverage, call your local Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plan. If you have any questions about Medicare, call 1.800.633.4227. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) also has information on its web site, www.opm.gov, that discusses FEHB benefits and Medicare.

As you read this booklet, please keep in mind that "you" and "your" mean either the employee or annuitant (retiree) who is enrolled in the Service Benefit Plan and whose name appears on the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Service Benefit Plan identification (ID) card, or a covered family member.

Please note: The Medicare information in this feature focuses on the Original Medicare Plan, Medicare Part A and Part B, unless otherwise noted. The Service Benefit Plan information refers to Standard and Basic Options only.

This is a summary of the features of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Service Benefit Plan. Before making a final decision, please read the 2008 Service Benefit Plan brochure (RI-71-005) brochure. All benefits are subject to the definitions, limitations and exclusions set forth in the federal brochure.

Please refer to the Medicare publications available at your local Social Security office for a description of your Medicare coverage.
