Blue Cross Blue Shield does have a network of Participating hospitals overseas. Although we do not have a network of Participating physicians and healthcare professionals, the Overseas Assistance Center can help you locate both a hospital in our network and a physician near where you are staying. You may have to pay for the services and then submit a claim for reimbursement.

Inpatient hospital care
Standard Option benefits are paid at the Preferred level. You are responsible for a $200 admission copayment. Precertification is not required for hospital admission outside the U.S.
Basic Option benefits are paid at the Preferred level. You are responsible for a $150 per day copayment up to the $750 per admission. Precertification is not required for a hospital admission outside the U.S.
Outpatient hospital care
Standard Option benefits are paid at the Preferred level, based on the Overseas Fee Schedule. After your calendar year deductible is met, you pay only the 15% coinsurance amount for outpatient hospital or facility care.
Basic Option benefits are paid at the Preferred level, based on the Overseas Fee Schedule. You pay only $50 per day per facility copayment for outpatient hospital or facility care.
Physician care
Standard Option benefits for care provided by a physician or other covered professional provider outside the U.S. are paid at the Preferred level based on the Overseas Fee Schedule.
Prescription drugs
Drugs and medications that require prescriptions overseas may differ from those that require a prescription in the U.S. Drugs purchased outside the U.S. must be an equivalent product to drugs that by Federal law of the U.S. require a prescription to purchase.
Pharmacy
If you purchase a prescription drug at a local pharmacy outside the U.S., you will have to pay for the medication and then file a claim to us for reimbursement. Payment will be based on the Preferred level benefit.Mail Service
Under Standard Option, you can also order prescription drugs through the Mail Service Prescription Drug Program. Your address must have a U.S. ZIP code and the prescribing physician must be licensed in the U.S.
